Clamping Press Tonnage Calculator
Required clamping force of the mold carrier / press from the part projected area.
Inputs
Projected area in m². 1 m² = 1,000,000 mm².

How this calculator works
PDCPD is injected as a low-viscosity liquid at low pressure, so the clamping force needed is far lower than for thermoplastic injection molding. The mold carrier or press still has to hold the mold closed against the expansion of the reacting material.
This calculator estimates the required clamping force from the projected area of the part using a fixed empirical factor of 21 × 2, that is 42 tonnes per square metre.
Formulas
- Required clamp force
projected area × 21 × 2
21 and 2 are fixed empirical factors.
Worked example
A part with 1.25 m² projected area:
| Part projected area | 1.25 m² |
|---|
| Required clamp force | 52 t |
|---|
When to use it
- Choosing a mold carrier or press for a new PDCPD part
- Checking whether an existing press can run a larger part
Frequently asked questions
How much clamping force does a PDCPD mold need?
This rule uses 42 tonnes per square metre of projected area (21 × 2). A part with 1.25 m² projected area needs about 52.5 tonnes.
Why is PDCPD clamp force so much lower than injection molding?
PDCPD enters the mold as a low-viscosity liquid at low pressure and cures by reaction, so cavity pressure is low compared with molten thermoplastic.
What unit is the projected area in?
Square metres. To convert from mm², divide by 1,000,000; 1,250,000 mm² is 1.25 m².
